The month of September brings along many things that are important to me. School is back in session and leaves begin to yellow, signaling the beginning of my second favorite season, Fall. Most importantly, my oldest daughter is a September child. And, the Sapphire is the gem for the month. I am very fond of this beautiful stone.

I began collecting different colors of the gem. My favorite, and the one I always give my daughter is the deepest blue. Something about it soothes the soul. And this is what I always want for my daughter.

One day, I heard about the orange variety and had to have it. In my research, I found that it is rare and valuable stone. Its name, the Padparadscha is the word for lotus in Sinhalese. I purchased a single, oval gemstone and had it set on a ring for my daughter.

Corundum?

As well as being the birthstone for September, Sapphires are the gem of the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries. They are the hardest of the gemstones, second only to the Diamond.

The gems belong to the mineral family of corundums, an aluminum oxide, and come in every color but red. The blue variety’s color is due to its iron and titanium content. The yellows and pale greens have a lower iron content. A pink Sapphire’s color comes from its chrome content. This brings me to something that I do not understand.

The Ruby is red. The Ruby is also a corundum. Why then is the Ruby its own separate gem? Why not add it to the list just like the Padparadscha? I guess it is a historical thing since the Ruby’s name goes back to its discovery. Yet, I wonder if there is something more to it. If you have any ideas, please leave me a comment at the bottom.

Sapphires in History

Historically, the blue variety has been treasured throughout cultures. The Bible mentions it as one of the stones found in the breast-plate of the High Priests. The Clergy has also worn Sapphires because they symbolized Heaven.

The yellow Sapphire is a prosperity stone. It vibrates with the Solar Plexus chakra and helps you to manifest anything for which you wish. Having a strong third chakra is essential in defeating the fear and doubt that sometimes stands in the way of achieving one’s goals.

The Padparadscha vibrates at the second chakra, the center of creativity and sexuality. it is also connected to the heart chakra and aids in activating love in our life.

Sri Lankans saw the Padparadscha as a stone of wisdom.

To amplify this gem’s abilities, pair it with other reddish and orange stones like Carnelian and Proustite.

The pink Sapphire is a gem of love and forgiveness and is associated with the heart chakra. It represents endurance and resilience. Wear it when you feel wronged because it will aid in healing wounds, as well as forgiving the wrong-doer.

White Sapphires are stones of strength of spirit. They encourage spiritual courage and the pursuit of the inner truth.

Physically, a white Sapphire stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands.

Combine it with Moldavite to bring clarity of mind and understanding.

The Star Sapphire is the most energetically active of all the Sapphires. It has inclusions of the highly charged emanations of Rutile, amplifying the Sapphires effects.

And, it is wonderful to gaze into! The stone serves as a reminder that we too have a star latent within us. It is a grounding stone that will help you plant your feet firmly on the ground and help you finish what you start.

Once you own a Sapphire you will understand why one isn’t enough! Because of their varied colors, you can very well work on every single chakra using only Sapphires.

And, they are worth the investment. Their hardness makes them a forever stone; you will pass your precious gems to your next generation.
