Turquoise Blue

Turquoise is the birthstone for the month of December. Its colors range from sky blue through various shades of green; to greenish and yellowish gray. It is an opaque stone of hydrated copper and aluminum phosphate.
It is also the stone for Sagittarius which runs from November 22-December 21. And, it is the anniversary gemstone for the 5th year of marriage.

History

Ancient Egyptians called Turquoise mefkat which means joy. They adorned themselves with it. So when they passed, they buried many jewelry pieces made with this beautiful blue stone. These pieces are some of the oldest Turquoise known to us.

The Aztecs believed that Turquoise belonged to the gods and mortals couldn’t wear it. Montezuma gave Cortes the god’s favorite gem, Turquoise, thinking Cortes was Quetzalcoatl.

More than 3,000 years ago, the Chinese carved it into beautiful designs.

The stone made its way to Europe from the Sinai Peninsula through Turkey. It’s no surprise that its name means Turkish in French.

Lore

According to legend,  the Native American Indians danced and rejoiced when the rains came. Their tears of joy mixed with the rain and seeped into Mother Earth to become SkyStone Turquoise.
